Swalec products and services

Swalec provides gas and electricity services to Wales. Swalec is dedicated to finding the most affordable tariffs for both home and business customers.

Swalec Smart Meter

Home customers can take advantage of a range of gas and electricity tariffs to suit their needs- such as no energy price rises until 2016. You could also get a smart meter which tracks your energy usage so that when you submit your meter reading, you only need to pay for what you have actually used. Interestingly, gas and electricity is not the only string in Swalec’s bow. You can also get phone and broadband services as well as heating and wiring. You can also get advice on ‘going green’, also known as being more energy efficient. To get a quick energy price, call the team or enter your postcode online.

Swalec for Businesses

If you are a business owner, energy can be expensive. However, Swalec’s tariffs are competitively priced and offer a great service for businesses of all sizes. A personal service is offered with solutions engineered to suit your heating, lighting, power and renewable energy requirements. Swalec can also deliver, as well as invest in gas, electricity, water and heat infrastructure to both new and existing residential and commercial developments such as housing estates and offices. Swalec also offers telecoms services, whether you need capacity on the existing network or a dedicated space. The company also operates several data centres with a high specification.

If you’re not sure which tariff would be suitable for you, Swalec can offer a price comparison tool so you can see exactly which one is suitable. There is also an iPhone app which allows you to take control of your gas and electricity bills as well as being another way of updating your meter readings. You can make payments with your debit card through the app as well as manage your overall account and personal details such as payment cards.

Swalec boiler cover

Swalec runs a system of boiler, electricity and heating cover called “Shield” which protects all of their utilities systems and helps keep the house warm, no matter what happens. Your boiler, electrical wiring and central heating will all be covered with maintenance and breakdown cover, and depending on the level of cover you opt for, Shield offers annual services, plus unlimited call-outs and parts at no extra cost.

The Shield experts are always on-call, and it will always be a member of their team who responds to your issue, so you can be sure that you’re getting the same great service and experienced, dedicated professionals every time – and they’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so even if your emergency is in the middle of the night, a Sunday afternoon, or Christmas Day, they’ll be there to solve it and get your house back to perfect working order!

You don’t even need to be a gas or electricity customer for Swalec to provide Shield cover for your home – just call them and ask. A boiler failure can be one of the worst possible home disasters, at best leaving you with no hot water or central heating… At worst causing a flood, a fire, or an explosion. Don’t leave it to chance and don’t leave yourself without a shield – get Swalec boiler cover!

Swalec: How to read meter

To read your digital electric meter, read the first five numbers from left to right, including zeros. If you have a dial meter, read the dials as you go but ignore the one marked 1/10. If the dial is between two numbers, write down the lower number. For imperial gas meters, read the first four numbers from left to right, including any zeros at the beginning. For metric meters, read the first five numbers from left to right.

About Swalec

Swalec (South Wales Electric) is an electricity and gas supply company which was bought out in 1996  by Welsh Water following the de-regulation of the electricity supply board. Before privatisation, it was known as the South Wales Electricity Board, formed from the merger of local authority and private electricity companies. Following the purchase, Welsh Water rebranded itself as Hyder. The plan was to make significant changes by combining electricity with water services. SWALEC was also the sponsor of the Wales Challenge Cup named the Swalec Cup and the name continues to be attached to several league competitions. In 2000, Swalec was sold to British Energy before later being sold to Scottish and Southern Energy later that year for reportedly £210 million.

At this moment in time, Swalec remains to be a brand name used by Scottish and Southern Energy for its services throughout Wales.
