To read your digital electric meter, read the first five numbers from left to right, including zeros. If you have a dial meter, read the dials as you go but ignore the one marked 1/10. If the dial is between two numbers, write down the lower number. For imperial gas meters, read the first four numbers from left to right, including any zeros at the beginning. For metric meters, read the first five numbers from left to right.
Swalec (South Wales Electric) is an electricity and gas supply company which was bought out in 1996 by Welsh Water following the de-regulation of the electricity supply board. Before privatisation, it was known as the South Wales Electricity Board, formed from the merger of local authority and private electricity companies. Following the purchase, Welsh Water rebranded itself as Hyder. The plan was to make significant changes by combining electricity with water services. SWALEC was also the sponsor of the Wales Challenge Cup named the Swalec Cup and the name continues to be attached to several league competitions. In 2000, Swalec was sold to British Energy before later being sold to Scottish and Southern Energy later that year for reportedly £210 million.
At this moment in time, Swalec remains to be a brand name used by Scottish and Southern Energy for its services throughout Wales.
